The interior of the restaurant is where cooking, cleaning, game playing, and serving the customers take place.

There are 11 categories of interior decorations: Chair, Table, Door, Wall Decoration, Decoration (placed on the ground), Floor Tile, Wallpaper, Functional, Outdoor Only (placed only in the Outside Expansion), Kitchen Appliance, and Award.

The number of tables and chairs limits how many customers you can serve at a time. Note that only one chair per table accommodates a paying customer. Other chairs may be placed anywhere in the restaurant as 'waiting chairs', in which the customers will sit and wait for a table to open up, though not for long.

Functional items include arcade games, decorations that attract special customers, decorations that give various bonuses, toilets, sinks, and music players. Stoves and drink dispensers are both found under the Kitchen Appliance category.

There are also purely-decorative items to place in your interior, including a large selection of windows, doors, flooring, and wallpaper.

The size of the interior can be increased by reaching higher levels.

The exterior of the restaurant is completely decorative, with nothing serving a purpose for improving your experience or coin gain.

Unlike the interior of the restaurant, the exterior is 2D, showing only the restaurant's face. The size of exterior can be expanded with coins, by applying bigger building "bodies". There is no need to buy each successively larger body; if you have enough coins for it, you can go from the smallest to the largest body in one step. Al though, more customers will be attracted to your restaurant by having a bigger body. Also, if you have enough coins, you can buy the decorations and give your restaurant a nice atmosphere. Customers will stop by to check out your restaurant if you have a number of decorations advertising your restaurant.

The name of the restaurant can be changed if there is a banner.

Exterior decorations are items which are used to decorate the exterior of the restaurant. There are currently 9 categories in exterior decorations: Body, Roof, Door, Window, Tile, Banner, Wall Decoration, Street Decoration, and Functional.

The Gourmet King

The Gourmet King (called the Food King on some ad billboards) was a new feature added into Restaurant City in the December 1, 2009 update. The feature required users to search for the Gourmet King hidden in different scenes of the game. As of now, the Gourmet King has been spotted in 3 different locations:

• Seated on a picnic blanket near the Garden Plots
• Walking on the pavement outside the restaurant
• Standing on the street while in Street View

Upon finding the Gourmet King, the user will be able to choose 1 of 3 rewards. A total of 10 distinct rewards have been made available but only 3 are available as choices for each Gourmet King spotting.

Thus far, rewards may be either ingredients, special limited edition items, or recipes for new dishes.

Ingredients available are:

• Corn on the Cob (Starter)

Users who find the Gourmet King will then be asked to choose between two random ingredients and one random recipe, as selected by the game. The user will then be prompted to publish a post on his wall, from which his friends may claim the prize chosen. Prizes may only be claimed by a user's friends and not by himself. Each Gourmet King post will expire after 48 hours, and each person can only claim 5 rewards per day.

Recipes are obtained by collecting the appropriate ingredients and learning the recipe within your menu.

The game starts you off with one starter dish, Tomato and Basil Soup, one main dish, Margarita Pizza, and one dessert dish, Fruit Selection. At level 15, you automatically learn the Glass of Water drink when drink-serving unlocks.

Recipes start at Simple, such as Simple Margarita Pizza. After obtaining the recipe the first time (level 1, some recipes start at level 1), you can level a recipe up nine times (for a maximum of level 10). Each time you level up a recipe, it gains a new title. For more information on recipe levels, see Level (Dish).

Some recipes, such as holiday dishes, are available only for a limited time. After the duration is over, these dishes disappear from the menu if you haven't learned them. However, you can still level up limited edition recipes if you obtained them.

The following table lists all recipes, past and present, that have been available to learn. Recipes marked with an asterisk (*) were limited time offers and cannot be obtained currently.

Recipes are broken down into meal types (Starter, Main, Dessert, and Drink) and then into recipe types:

• Freely Available - available all the time.
  • Recipes labeled "Free Recipe" are start at level 1 when you first open your restaurant
• Fan Freebies - available only to fans.
• Gourmet King - rewards from finding the Gourmet King.
• Themed Meals - available for short durations. Themed Meals are based on a particular holiday theme, such as Christmas or Halloween, or on a random idea, like the Wild West or Ancient Egyptian.
  • Some themed meals have a limited duration availability, but not all of them.
• Limited Time - available for short durations, but have no theme.

Not every meal type has all four recipe type options.

Ingredients are items that are used to level up dishes. There are many ways to obtain ingredients in Restaurant City.

Each ingredient has a 'quality' rating, depicted by one to five stars. Outside of trading, this currently has no effect in the game.

The March 5, 2010, update reordered the star rating on ingredients. They now indicate how rare an ingredient is, with one being common and five being the most rare. The ingredients on Restaurant City Wiki have not been updated to reflect these changes. This update is coming in the next couple days.

Originally, there were only 49 different ingredients. Several upgrades since have drastically increased the number of ingredients available.

There are multiple ways to get ingredients.

1. By playing the game, you are given up to three random ingredients per day.
   • If you did not play the day before, you are given one ingredient.
   • If you played the day before, but not the day before that, you are given two ingredients.
   • If you play more often than the above, you are given three ingredients. So if you play every day, you are given three ingredients every day.
2. The first time you visit a new neighbor, you are given one free random ingredient.
3. By answering the daily food quiz correctly, you are given one free random ingredient.
4. You can trade ingredients with your neighbors, exchanging one of your ingredients for one of theirs.
   • Players can 'lock' ingredients, requiring your neighbor to give permission to trade that item.
   • If an ingredient is not 'locked' and has a quality rating equal or less than the quality rating of the ingredient you wish to give them, it will automatically trade.
   • If the ingredient is not 'locked' and has a higher quality rating than the ingredient you wish to trade, it will require your neighbor's permission to trade.
5. The ingredient market sells three random ingredients for 2,200 to 10,000 coins each day.
6. The ingredient market also sells most ingredients for 4 to 8 Playfish Cash.

A dish gains levels as the player gathers specific ingredients to increase its quality. Dishes are what the customer eats to give you coins and Gourmet Points, to advance your restaurant. Except for the beginner dishes and special offer dishes, every dish starts at level 0. A dish must be Level 1 before it can be served in your restaurant.

Beginner dishes are given to you for free when starting out in Restaurant City; you automatically get level 1 in Tomato and Basil Soup (starter/appetizer), Burger and Fries (main dish), and Fruit Selection (dessert). When you hit level 15, you gain the ability to serve drinks and you automatically get level 1 in Glass of Water.

Special offer dishes start at level 1, which allows them to be served immediately in your restaurant. An example is Carrot Cake, when it was available as a "Fan Freebie" through the Restaurant City Facebook fan page. (Confusingly, Carrot Cake is also available through the Gourmet King at level 0.)
